A Mission for Empowerment and Transformation in Africa

I traveled to Africa in my capacity as Director of Business Development for Olive Branch Mission, one of the oldest rescue missions in the United States. The core focus of this journey was to support sustainable economic empowerment, specifically targeting women and orphans in vulnerable communities.

The primary aim of the trip was to help launch income-generating initiatives that would foster long-term self-sufficiency, moving beyond traditional models of dependency. A significant part of this effort involved investing in beekeeping projects. We purchased beehives to enable honey production, providing local women and families with a steady and renewable source of income.

We also engaged with the Maasai tribe to explore ways to introduce their traditional beadwork to markets in the United States. In particular, we discussed forming partnerships with fraternities and sororities to create new avenues for these artisanal products. These conversations emphasized ethical sourcing, preserving cultural heritage, and ensuring fair compensation for the artisans.

During our travels, we visited Kibera, one of the largest slums in the world. There, we met families living in extreme poverty and facing deep systemic challenges. We also connected with refugees from the Rwandan genocide, gaining firsthand understanding of the far- reaching effects of violence, displacement, and profound loss.

Throughout the mission, I encountered survivors of the U.S. Embassy bombing and others who had lived through unimaginable hardships. Despite these experiences, they displayed remarkable resilience, unwavering faith, and a generous spirit. One encounter with a young girl who survived the massacre of her family left a lasting impression on me, highlighting the extraordinary strength of the human spirit and reinforcing the urgency of our work.

Beyond the practical and strategic outcomes, this experience was deeply transformative on a personal level. I witnessed profound examples of courage, resilience, and love. .

The journey also deepened my understanding of servant leadership, bolstered my faith, and reaffirmed my commitment to mission-driven work that restores dignity, self- sufficiency, and hope through Christ-centered service.
